GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
The Galapagos Islands is an AMAZING family getaway even for children as young as 7. The land-based itineraries come highly recommended for families who want to explore and spend time together. We do not recommend the Galapagos for children under the age of 7 because the wildlife experience is

so unique. We hope your children can experience the Galapagos at an age when they can appreciate the moment and remember it when they get older.

Also of note,, if you choose to take a boat tour, many of the yachts do not accept children under 4. And we do not feel that the yachts are equipped to handle young children. Check out our Galapagos trips >>

Where-to-Go

Trip-Tips

We have collected here a few items that you should consider when planning your family trip.
  • Consider traveling with another family with children of similar age(s), (ages 3 to 9). You’ll enjoy your trip more.
  • Plan your trip at least 9 months to 1 year in advance. For the Galapagos, plan 1 year in advance, it will ensure you get the most appropriate lodging and guided activities.
  • Families with young children should consider 1/2 day activities.
  • Choose a guided trip. You will be able to actually enjoy the trip instead of worrying about where you are going to eat, and where you are heading next. It will allow you to concentrate on yourself and your family.

CLOUDFORESTS
An alternative to the Amazon rainforest for those families with young children is the cloudforest regions of Ecuador. There are several cloudforest locations dotted throughout the country of Ecuador. Base your stay out of a hacienda and enjoy day hikes and cultural activities in surrounding areas.

Cloud forests are simply rainforests located at higher altitudes. The biologically diversity found in cloud forests rival the more famous Amazon basin. Although it may not have as many large size mammals, it is an amazing region for birds, orchids, butterflies and amphibians. Although birding doesn’t seem as glamorous as monkeys, in the cloud forest, you will be amazed at the bird life here, especially the hummingbirds.

In addition, the temperature in cloud forests is more easily tolerated with temperatures - evenings may reach 55F and the day may go as high as 80F. And even better news, no mosquitoes.

ANDES HIGHLANDS
Try an Andean adventure with your children. Keep them interested with horseback riding in the mountains with Ecuadorian cowboys, textile weaving presentations, and homemade ice cream. Get them involved at the local markets and have them negotiate prices with local vendors.

With young children, it’s often much easier to be based in one location and from there do day trips to various locations. The Andes have quite a few colonial haciendas with excellent amenities set in spectacular surroundings.
