Regional-Spotlight

Going off the beaten path is our specialty. From easy day hikes to unmarked trails, the choices are limitless. In fact, we are constantly finding new routes

The best way to start your trip planning is to talk with us. Save yourself time from scouring on the internet or pouring over guide books and call us. As we get to know you we can help you design the ideal itinerary for you. Our guides who lead our hikes know these areas well, and can offer some spectacular trails for those who wish to go beyond the typical.

Below we describe various regions where we find the hiking absolutely breathtaking. However, these are only but a small sample of the many locations available. You may have to make more than one trip!

BANOS and Llanganates National Park
You can base out of a charming hacienda located near the Llanganates National Park and enjoy hikes for days retracing the steps of treasure hunters in search of Incan gold rumored to

be buried in the park. And in the evening, sip on wine while watching Volcano Tungurahua erupt in the distance. This area offers some spectacular and accessible hiking routes, and some spectacular mountain biking options.

COTOPAXI
-Many people say you can’t visit Ecuador without seeing Cotopaxi. Cotopaxi National Park is home to the famous glaciated conical volcano Cotopaxi one of the highest volcanoes in the world. You don’t have to summit Cotopaxi, but you can just hike up to the refuge.

Hiking in this area is also a favorite among the staff. The subarctic tundra and the grassland landscape offers a serene and zen-like environment. Wild horses roam in Cotopaxi National Park where they have cut trails in the mountains. Mt Ruminahui offers a beautiful hike, or you can head closer to Quito and hike Pasochoa which has one of the last remaining primary Andean forests.

In the evening, you can choose to stay in a rustic farmhouse or go a little more luxury at one of the handful of upscale colonial haciendas.

MINDO-NAMBILLO RESERVE
There are numerous cloudforest regions in Ecuador. Mindo-Nambilla reserve is one of the more well-known sites because it is a well-known birdwatchers mecca and rich in biodiversity. It holds some amazing hiking trails through lush

cloudforests where you can see wild orchids, butterflies and hummingbirds. We definitely recommend at least 2 days of hiking in this area.

Otavalo-08

OTAVALO and Surrounding Area
The neighboring towns of Otavalo seem to skirt the base of the ever-revered volcano Imbabura. Well-worn trails and roads between the towns meander through the countryside and offer perfect routes

to travel through this region. This area is worth staying two to three days of exploring and an extra day to hang out at Otavalo Market.

Papallacta-thumbnail

PAPALLACTA
This cloudforest region is famous for its hot springs and deservedly so. The cloudforest is located about 10,000 feet above sea level and offers lush wet tropical style environments but with cool temperatures. This area offers

some breathtaking hikes provided that the weather is fairly clear. We recommend hiking in the morning and relaxing in the afternoon because the clouds tend to settle heavily by mid-afternoon. The best part of hiking in this area... You end up in steaming hot springs.

T&-E-Quilotoa

QUILOTOA
At one time this area was truly off the beaten track, but now it has become a must-visit site. There are more eco-lodging choices and the green quilted landscape is peaceful, and truly breathtaking. This region can offer both intermediate and advanced biking trails.
