This program is designed for people who are interested in emergency care where advanced hospital equipment and supplies are absent and where disease and traumatic injuries are specific to third world conditions. This training is second to none for individuals who want to practice their pre-hospital training while caring for an area of the world that needs volunteers.
In various clinical locations in Ecuador. These sites are a day’s travel from a city and hospitals, some high in the Andes and others along the Amazon River. The village people are in great need of medical assessment and care. Many never travel to the city hospital for treatment because they have no money for the boat and bus fares.
Students are placed in clinical situations based on experience, interest, and host need. Some students will be working at small hospitals, and some will go on rounds with physicians across the country side. There are days scheduled for rest and adventure, as well.
Our first Relief Medic experience took place in August 2005, in the Amazon jungle in Ecuador. A brief synopsis of their stay: medicines and vaccines purchased in Quito and donated to village doctor, open-air villa with fresh-cooked meals, dugout boat rides up and down the Rio Napo to clinical sites, hiking through the Amazon jungle, visit to hot springs, fairs, and over 350 patients, including 2 emergency child births, seen in 5 days at 7 different villages by 9 medical personnel. “An experience of a lifetime,” said a Paramedic with 20 years pre-hospital experience who attended.
