New TOURISM catch phrases like community tourism, geotourism and social tourism are starting to enter the realm of adventure travel.

Have you ever wanted to support a non-profit organization, but wanted to make sure that their efforts were truly creating a sustainable environment and a healthy local economy? Here’s an opportunity to travel and to really meet local residents, as well as find out what non-profit organizations and communities are doing to improve the lives of people and the environment.

This month’s NGO spotlight is WORLD NEIGHBORS, an international development organization transforming the lives of families in Latin America, including Ecuador, Asia and Africa, through training programs that combine agriculture, literacy, health, water and environmental protection. Guatemala-Journey

Date: September 8-15, 2008

Day 1 - Arrive in Guatemala City. Guests are met at airport. Orientation and cultural tour in Guatemala City.
Day 2 - Rabinal and Eastern Highlands.
Meet with World Neighbors partner organizations in the Rabinal area. Learn about how they are addressing health and hygiene issues. Meet with women leaders.
Day 3 - Purulha.
Meet with groups working in sustainable agriculture and environmental protection.
Day 4 - San Cristobal Verapaz.
Community visits in the area to learn how farmers are using organic farming to improve crop produciton and income, meet local leaders.
Day 5 - Travel to western highlands and Chichicastenango. Shopat the market in Chichicastenango and tour the main cathedral before arriving in Santiago in the evening.
Day 6 - Santiago de Atitlan community visits. Meet women’s groups, coffee growers.
Day 7 - San Lucas de Toliman and Antigua.
Morning visit with more local partners adn travel to Antigua for an afternoon. Shopping.
Day 8 - Return flight.

Volunteer-Ops

Ecuador has an excellent selection of reputable NGO and non-profit organizations. They are often looking for volunteers. Skilled volunteers are preferred. You should expect competition for these volunteer positions. 

Each organization has its minimum requirements and list of expectations for volunteers.
